From the moment we landed on the pristine shores of RAAYA by Atmosphere, we knew it would be an unforgettable experience. The seaplane journey was a breathtaking prelude, offering panoramic views of the Maldives' unique atolls, a mosaic of deep ocean blues and vibrant turquoise reefs. This 45-minute flight provided a stunning 'sense of arrival,' setting the tone for an extraordinary island retreat.
Total tropicality
Upon arrival, the sheer beauty of RAAYA's natural surroundings struck us. The island, one of the largest in the Raa Atoll, spans an impressive 390,000 square meters. Lush tropical greenery and crystalline waters envelop the resort, creating a perfect backdrop for a luxurious getaway. Our accommodation, a Water Villa with Pool, was a haven of tranquillity. The private pool, perched over the water, offered a spectacular view of the surrounding lagoon. Whether enjoying a morning dip or a starlit swim, the setting was nothing short of magical. The villa was well-appointed with modern amenities, a beautiful white colour palette and discreet Maldivian touches.
Destination dining
The resort's culinary offerings were a journey in themselves. With six dining options, each meal was a delightful exploration of flavours. Our favourite spot was AMPERS&ND, which had exquisite Pan-Asian cuisine with locally sourced seafood. The use of fresh ingredients in each dish added an authentic touch and delicious passion fruit mojitos made the meal truly memorable.
Evenings were spent watching beautiful sunsets from Seb's Shack, a bohemian beachside eatery ideal for light bites and refreshing drinks. The casual, laid-back Atmosphere offered a wonderful way to see the island switch from day to night.
Underwater adventures
Beyond the gastronomic delights, RAAYA offers a plethora of activities catering to all ages and interests. The serene beaches were ideal for relaxation, but our inner adventure-seeker was thrilled by the array of water sports available. The resort's PADI-certified Diving School and Water Sports Centre provided everything needed for an action-packed day, providing access to the house reef, teeming with colourful fish. For those who aren't certified, the resort also offers snorkelling excursions, which you can use by simply jumping out of your water villa into the Indian Ocean.
One of the most enchanting experiences was the traditional sunset boat trip. As the sun dips below the horizon, casting golden hues across the water, you can't help but feel hypnotised and profoundly peaceful while the boat sways on calm waters. The friendly and knowledgeable staff ensured a smooth and enjoyable experience throughout the entire stay on the island.
Island living
At the heart of the resort lies The Village, a vibrant hub that caters to every guest's needs. This lively area is the go-to spot for dining, shopping, wellness, art, and entertainment. Whether indulging in a private dining experience or exploring the eco-friendly ELE|NA Spa and wellness centre, the village was the centre of it all.
RAAYA also caters wonderfully to families and those seeking leisure activities on land. The Discovery Den Kids' Club is guaranteed to be a hit with younger guests, offering a range of activities to keep them entertained. The art and craft studio was a delightful surprise, providing creative workshops that were fun and relaxing for kids and adults alike.
The Verdict
The resort's commitment to showcasing Maldivian culture added a rich layer to the experience. From the design of the villas to the cultural activities offered, a strong sense of place enriched our stay. The staff, many of whom were local, shared insights into the region's traditions and customs, providing a deeper understanding of the Maldives.
